The Naked Eye The Naked Eye:
A True Account of a Stripper's Journey

by Shay Stephen

[LMR PICK] This San Francisco dancer has written a very personal, almost diary like account of her experiences stripping, from when she first started as a waitress to her ups and downs in publishing her book. Many people have always asked what living the life of a stripper is like. Well, this book gives you a pretty good idea and then some. From her detailed accounts and character descriptions, you will get to know Shay as well as the people she came in contact with as if you were right there with her. It reads like a Judy Bloom book, but with an obviously different subject matter. There are many funny, interesting, and sometimes even sad and brutally real accounts of strip club life through the eyes of this real life stripper. At 375 pages, this is not a short book, and if given the choice, we may have cut out a couple of chapters. However, this is definitely one good read. Shay Stephen can be found dancing in San Francisco at the Chez Paree several nights a week.

Maxim: For Men MAXIM: FOR MEN

[LMR PICK] As some would say, "This Magazine is da bomb!" ... and that's bomb in a very good way. This magazine is not a strip club magazine, however, it's probably one of the hottest and hip magazines out on the scene. "Sex, Sports, Beer, Gadgets, Clothes and Fitness," and that's just on the cover banner. They always have a hot chick on the cover, and in the most recent issue, they even have a great article on Russian strip clubs, with a headline quote, "at Soviet strip clubs, they take it all off... and then some." Can you tell we like this mag yet? Anyway, this is definitely one cool magazine plus it costs less for a year's subscription than one lap dance at most strip clubs.

Striptease STRIPTEASE
with Demi Moore

This Hollywood Blockbuster with Demi Moore sensationalizes and enforces many of the common stripper stereotypes, but it does bring across a few of the real issues related to exotic dancers such as money, childcare, and how society views them. However, they do push the envelope in the stereotyping of bad husbands, pathetic loser customers, and corrupt senators to the point of caricaturizing them. Well, at least with the husbands and customers. Demi Moore obviously plays the star in this movie that twists and turns through her attempts at gaining custody of her daughter. She is in excellent condition and actually shows off with several great stageshows. Word is that she actually spent a lot of time in The Body Shop, a Los Angeles strip club, in preperation for this movie. Supposedly, she was paid over $12 million dollars to do this movie, making her probably the highest paid stripper in history. Ving Rhames also does a great job in the bouncer/friend/protector role. However, Burt Reynolds steals the spotlight with his protrayal of the sleazy senator who is enamored with Demi's stripper character. Pandora Peaks, a feature performer and magazine model, also makes an appearance as the experienced dancer Urbana Sprawl in the movie. We can't give this movie a wholehearted thumbs up, but it is a decent movie and if you haven't seen it, it's worth a look for the stage scenes and a peek in the locker room!
